Apple has announced the next generation of its popular smart devices, including the iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus and Watch Series 2. Focusing on the iPhone experience, Apple has upgraded the smartphone camera system, battery life, speakers and display, and has added splash and water resistance. In a less popular decision, Apple also removed the headphone jack from the new smartphone. Users will now need to use wireless buds or use a Lightning port adapter (for wired headphones) that is expected to ship with the device.

While offering a few key upgrades, the iPhone 7 exterior design remains relatively unchanged. According to Ian Fogg, head of mobile analysis, IHS Technology, this is a risk, given that the iPhone is the main driver of growth for the company — directly affecting the up-sell of its other devices. “iPhone models with big exterior design change trigger a larger jump in shipments, while incremental ‘S’ designs have seen lower year-on-year growth rates,” said Fogg. Only time will tell if Apple’s significant upgrades in camera and battery technology will offset the lack of other major changes.

In this slideshow, we’ve highlighted new features debuting on the iPhone 7, Watch Series 2 and AirPods. Preorders for the iPhone 7 (retailing for $649) and 7 Plus (retailing for $769) will begin September 9th, with availability beginning September 16th.

iPhone 7 – Camera

The biggest upgrade with this release of the iPhone is seen in the camera technology. While the iPhone 7 and iPhone Plus both include a 12MP wide-angle camera, the iPhone 7 Plus will also include a 12MP telephoto camera. According to Apple, the ISP technology will allow you to capture sharp close-up photos and videos with optical zoom at 2x and improved digital zoom at up to 10x for photos and 6x for video. In the near future, Apple will also be releasing the depth-of-field effect for iPhone 7 Plus that will allow you to keep faces sharp while creating a blurred effect in the background. Both phones also come with a 7MP front-facing camera and optical image stabilization to reduce blur associated with motion and handshake.

iPhone 7 – iOS and Processing

iPhone and iPhone 7 Plus come with iOS 10, which includes an update on Messages that delivers more expressive and animated ways to message friends and family, the ability for Siri to do more, new ways to interact with apps and more places to use 3D Touch.

The new smartphone uses an A10 Fusion chip that is said to be 2x faster than the iPhone 6. The new chip is also expected to provide up to two more hours of battery life on the iPhone 7 and up to one more hour on the iPhone 7 Plus than the previous generation. Both phones will be available in 32GB, 128GB and 256GB models, with the new jet black finish available only in 128GB or 256GB models.

iPhone 7 – Finishes and Water Resistance

The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will now come in five finishes – jet black, matte black, gold, silver and rose gold. The case of the iPhone 7 has been reengineered to provide splash and water resistance – the phone is not waterproof.

iPhone 7 – Retina HD Display

With a new wide color gamut, the Retina HD display is able to deliver cinema-standard colors. According to Apple, more shades of the color spectrum can be used to create an image, meaning that what you see on the screen is a truer representation of the world. The new Retina HD display has also been deeply integrated with 3D Touch throughout the iOS.

The iPhone 7 comes with a screen that measures 4.7″ and supports a 1334×750 resolution. The iPhone 7 Plus comes with a larger screen size of 5.5″ and supports a 1920×1080 resolution.

iPhone 7 – Now in Stereo

The iPhone 7 will now come with stereo speakers, delivering twice the audio output of the iPhone 6. The smartphone comes with EarPods that have a Lightning connector. If you want to listen with wired headphones you already own, the device will ship with a headphone jack adaptor, as the headphone jack has been removed.

AirPods

If you’re not prone to losing small items, you might want to check out the new AirPods, a wireless set of headphones that will be available in late October. According to Apple, after a simple one-tap setup, AirPods are automatically on and always connected. The AirPods are also compatible with Apple Watch, iPad and Mac. With a double-tap to either AirPod, you’re also able connect directly to Siri without taking your iPhone out of your pocket – allowing you to make calls, play music, adjust the volume, etc.

The AirPods provide up to five hours of battery life on a single charge and the case provides additional charges for more than 24 hours of listening time.

Watch Series 2

Apple Watch Series 2 is packed with fitness and health capabilities including a water resistance 50 meter rating for swimming and built-in GPS so users can now run without an iPhone. Apple Watch Series 2 also features a brighter display and a dual-core processor. Combined with the performance enhancements of watchOS 3, Apple Watch Series 2 makes it easier to access third-party apps, receive and respond to notifications and conveniently use Apple Pay. Apple Watch Series 2 will be available in more than 25 countries beginning Friday, September 16 and will retail for $159.

The Internet of Things is fueling a revolution of connectivity across the world. From businesses to consumers, IoT technology is opening up brand new frontiers for monitoring, controlling and accessing data anywhere, anytime. According to a recent forecast by Consumer Technology Associates (CTA), broad adoption and enthusiasm for IoT technology will drive the consumer industry to a whopping $286.6 billion in retail revenue this year, an increase of 1.3 percent over last year.

“We’re in the midst of a critical transition period, as more IoT products offer the anytime/anywhere access and seamless experiences that today’s consumers want and need,” said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, CTA. “This is a pivotal point in consumer technology history, as emerging tech categories – virtual reality, voice-controlled digital assistants, drones – push the entire industry forward. And the value of these innovations goes far beyond entertainment – today’s technology is changing our lives for the better.”

According to CTA’s industry report, “U.S. Consumer Technology Sales and Forecasts,” while the five largest tech categories (smartphones, tablets, LCD televisions, laptops and desktop computers) will account for about half of the tech industry’s revenue this year, the story will change in 2017. Next year, CTA predicts that emerging tech will account for more than half of all consumer tech revenue.

IoT Adoption, Emerging Tech Driving Industry Revenue Growth - slide 2

Emerging Tech: 4K UHD Ecosystem

2016 will be a flagship year for 4K Ultra High-Definition (4K UHD) TVs, driven in part by the market introduction of next-generation technologies like HDR. CTA expects shipments of 4K UHD displays will reach 15 million units (a 105 percent increase), and revenue will exceed $12.9 billion (a 69 percent increase). New to the market in 2016, 4K UHD Blu-ray players will further build the 4K UHD ecosystem with 700,000 units sold and $63 million in revenue.

IoT Adoption, Emerging Tech Driving Industry Revenue Growth - slide 3

Emerging Tech: Wearables

Driven by the popularity of fitness activity trackers, unit sales of all wearables in 2016 are forecast to reach almost 48 million units (a 39 percent increase). Fitness activity tracker volumes will hit 28 million units in 2016 – a 60 percent increase from 2015 – with revenues reaching $2.2 billion – a 62 percent increase. After a year of strong growth, smartwatch unit growth is slowing, while revenue will decline for the first time. Units are expected to increase 15 percent to 12.2 million units, earning $2.8 billion in revenue, a decline of eight percent.

IoT Adoption, Emerging Tech Driving Industry Revenue Growth - slide 4

Emerging Tech: Smart Home

CTA projects the smart home category – including smart thermostats, smart smoke and CO2 detectors, IP/Wi-Fi cameras, smart locks, smart home systems, and smart switches, dimmers and outlets – to reach 9.5 million units sold in 2016 (a 29 percent increase). Revenue will grow to $1.3 billion (a 24 percent jump).

IoT Adoption, Emerging Tech Driving Industry Revenue Growth - slide 5

Emerging Tech: Drones

Drone sales are expected to reach record heights, topping 2.4 million units (up 112 percent from 2015) and $799 million in shipment revenues (an 80 percent increase from 2015). CTA’s forecast also delineates expected U.S. drone sales for units below and above 250 grams, the FAA’s threshold for mandatory drone registration, expected to reach 1.6 million units (below 250 grams) and 825,000 units (above 250 grams).

IoT Adoption, Emerging Tech Driving Industry Revenue Growth - slide 6

Emerging Tech: Virtual Reality (VR)

With several global tech leaders introducing VR headsets to the consumer market in 2016, CTA expects this to be the tech sector’s overwhelming leader in year-to-year growth. Unit sales will increase by 296 percent over last year, reaching 800,000 units sold. Total revenues are projected to reach $432 million, a 332 percent increase this year.

IoT Adoption, Emerging Tech Driving Industry Revenue Growth - slide 7

Emerging Tech: Digital Assistant Devices

This is the first year the semi-annual CTA report has included projections for voice-activated devices that provide a cloud-based artificial intelligence-powered virtual assistant, such as Amazon’s Echo. Sales are projected to reach 2.2 million units (up 32 percent) in 2016 and earn $392 million in revenue (increasing 32 percent).

IoT Adoption, Emerging Tech Driving Industry Revenue Growth - slide 8

Emerging Tech: 3D Printing

Ever-expanding 3D printing capabilities will drive the sector’s unit sales growth to increase 56 percent from last year, to reach 171,000 units sold. Total revenues will reach $148 million, a 35 percent increase.

IoT Adoption, Emerging Tech Driving Industry Revenue Growth - slide 9

Maturing Tech: Smartphones

CTA projects unit shipments to reach 183 million in 2016 (up five percent), while revenues will reach $55 billion (a four percent increase). As tremendous innovations in smartphone hardware over the past few years have lengthened the replacement cycle, 2017 will be the first year smartphones see a slight decline in unit sales and revenue.

IoT Adoption, Emerging Tech Driving Industry Revenue Growth - slide 10

Maturing Tech: Televisions

The TV market will remain on par with 2015, with unit sales estimated to reach 39.7 million units in 2016 (down one percent) and revenues expected to reach $20 billion (a three percent increase). LCD TVs, the category leader, will contribute 38.8 million units (a one percent decline) and $19.2 billion (two percent growth). Key areas of growth are large screen sizes, 4K UHD and smart TV displays.

IoT Adoption, Emerging Tech Driving Industry Revenue Growth - slide 11

Maturing Tech: Tablets

After momentous growth and widespread adoption over the past five years, tablet sales will decline again in 2016. CTA expects sales of 65 million units in 2016, a two percent decrease, and revenues of $19 billion, down five percent.

IoT Adoption, Emerging Tech Driving Industry Revenue Growth - slide 12

Maturing Tech: Laptops

Unit shipments of laptops are expected to reach 25 million units in 2016, a six percent decrease. Revenues are expected to reach $15.8 billion, an eight percent drop.

IoT Adoption, Emerging Tech Driving Industry Revenue Growth - slide 13

Maturing Tech: Desktops

Amid an accelerated decline, desktops are projected to sell seven million units (13 percent decrease), earning $4.6 billion in revenue (a 15 percent decrease).

It’s been about a year since Microsoft released its Windows 10 operating system — a system for which Microsoft rigorously courted developers and users to avoid the disastrous failure of Windows 8. Listening to feedback from users, Windows 10 saw the return of familiar features such as the Start menu, task bar and desktop. But the OS also introduced new features, such as full integration between PCs, mobile devices and Xbox One (allowing users to have a seamless experience despite the device being used), a new browser in Microsoft Edge, Cortana (a digital personal assistant) and innovative new security capabilities.

So what can we expect in the future? In this slideshow, we’ve highlighted some of the innovative new futures that will be included in this year’s Windows 10 Anniversary Update, expected later this year.

New Features: Windows 10 Anniversary Update - slide 2

Windows Ink

For those who like working with more flexibility and don’t like being tied to a keyboard, Microsoft is introducing Windows Ink. Using a pen or fingertip, users will have the capability to jot down notes using Sticky Notes or edit Office documents. Users will also be able to draw diagrams and watch them turn into the real thing on the computer. And because Windows Ink stays active when your device is locked, you’ll be able to jot down notes even when you don’t have time to enter a password. Windows Ink requires a touch-enabled device and the pen will be sold separately.

New Features: Windows 10 Anniversary Update - slide 3

Cortana

In the Anniversary Upgrade, Cortana will be accessible even before you log in to your system. Whether you want to make a note, play music or set a reminder, Cortana will have you covered.

New Features: Windows 10 Anniversary Update - slide 4

Windows Hello

Presently, Windows Hello lets you unlock your PC and devices with facial recognition or a quick touch. The new Windows Hello will also let you unlock your PC simply by tapping your Windows Hello-enabled phone. It will also give you instant access to paired apps and protected websites on Microsoft Edge. Windows Hello requires specialized hardware, including fingerprint reader, illuminated IR sensor or other biometric sensors.

New Features: Windows 10 Anniversary Update - slide 5

Games

Windows 10 will also deliver DirectX 12 games and Xbox Live features that will enhance your gaming experience. Users will be able to connect and play games over all devices. Additionally, Microsoft Studios is introducing a full range of new games for Windows 10.

Our world is advancing at a faster pace every year. With the advent of the Internet, the cloud and a bounty of mobile devices, our need to consume and access data continues to grow exponentially. This is a great thing for techies, especially software engineers, as it has created a vibrant market that provides ample job opportunities across the country.

But where can you find the best pay? That depends. Due to the variance in the cost of living – such as housing, transportation, food, etc. – the buying power of the same paycheck in Silicon Valley (where the cost of living is 21.3 percent higher than the national average) isn’t going to be equal to a paycheck in Madison, Wis. (where the cost of living is 2.3 percent lower than the national average).

To get an accurate read on the value of software engineer salaries across the country, Glassdoor has identified the 25 Best Paying Cities for Software Engineers by identifying the ‘real adjusted salary” for each city.

‘Real adjusted salary’ is determined by looking at the ratio of each city’s local median software engineer base salary to its official cost of living figures from the federal government. (Note: Government figures compare the average cost of living price level in each city to the national average, which is set at 100.)

While still in its infancy, the Internet of Things (IoT) has a full head of steam and shows no sign of slowing any time soon. From data center monitoring to HVAC and building maintenance to supply chain management and home automation, the connectivity and tracking possibilities are endless. Given the massive amounts of data that IoT will be adding to an already overloaded data stream, organizations will need to ensure they are well positioned to manage the very broad impact IoT will have on business strategy, risk management, as well as a wide range of technical areas like architecture and network design.

“The IoT demands an extensive range of new technologies and skills that many organizations have yet to master,” said Nick Jones, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner. “A recurring theme in the IoT space is the immaturity of technologies and services and of the vendors providing them. Architecting for this immaturity and managing the risk it creates will be a key challenge for organizations exploiting the IoT. In many technology areas, lack of skills will also pose significant challenges.”

This slideshow features the top 10 IoT technologies Gartner has identified that should be on every organization’s radar for 2017 and 2018.

Top 10 Internet of Things Technologies for 2017 and 2018 - slide 1

IoT Technology 2017 and 2018

Click through for the top 10 IoT technologies Gartner has identified as critical to successful IoT navigation over the next two years.

Top 10 Internet of Things Technologies for 2017 and 2018 - slide 2

IoT Security

The IoT introduces a wide range of new security risks and challenges to the IoT devices themselves, their platforms and operating systems, their communications, and even the systems to which they’re connected. Security technologies will be required to protect IoT devices and platforms from both information attacks and physical tampering, to encrypt their communications, and to address new challenges such as impersonating “things” or denial-of-sleep attacks that drain batteries. IoT security will be complicated by the fact that many “things” use simple processors and operating systems that may not support sophisticated security approaches.

“Experienced IoT security specialists are scarce, and security solutions are currently fragmented and involve multiple vendors,” said Mr. Jones. “New threats will emerge through 2021 as hackers find new ways to attack IoT devices and protocols, so long-lived ‘things’ may need updatable hardware and software to adapt during their life span.”

Top 10 Internet of Things Technologies for 2017 and 2018 - slide 3

IoT Analytics

IoT business models will exploit the information collected by “things” in many ways — for example, to understand customer behavior, to deliver services, to improve products, and to identify and intercept business moments. However, IoT demands new analytic approaches. New analytic tools and algorithms are needed now, but as data volumes increase through 2021, the needs of the IoT may diverge further from traditional analytics.

Top 10 Internet of Things Technologies for 2017 and 2018 - slide 4

IoT Device Management

Long-lived nontrivial “things” will require management and monitoring. This includes device monitoring, firmware and software updates, diagnostics, crash analysis and reporting, physical management, and security management. The IoT also brings new problems of scale to the management task. Tools must be capable of managing and monitoring thousands and perhaps even millions of devices.

Top 10 Internet of Things Technologies for 2017 and 2018 - slide 5

Low-Power, Short-Range IoT Networks

Selecting a wireless network for an IoT device involves balancing many conflicting requirements, such as range, battery life, bandwidth, density, endpoint cost and operational cost. Low-power, short-range networks will dominate wireless IoT connectivity through 2025, far outnumbering connections using wide-area IoT networks. However, commercial and technical trade-offs mean that many solutions will coexist, with no single dominant winner and clusters emerging around certain technologies, applications and vendor ecosystems.

Top 10 Internet of Things Technologies for 2017 and 2018 - slide 6

Low-Power, Wide-Area Networks

Traditional cellular networks don’t deliver a good combination of technical features and operational cost for those IoT applications that need wide-area coverage combined with relatively low bandwidth, good battery life, low hardware and operating cost, and high connection density. The long-term goal of a wide-area IoT network is to deliver data rates from hundreds of bits per second (bps) to tens of kilobits per second (kbps) with nationwide coverage, a battery life of up to 10 years, an endpoint hardware cost of around $5, and support for hundreds of thousands of devices connected to a base station or its equivalent. The first low-power, wide-area networks (LPWANs) were based on proprietary technologies, but in the long term emerging standards such as Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) will likely dominate this space.

Top 10 Internet of Things Technologies for 2017 and 2018 - slide 7

IoT Processors

The processors and architectures used by IoT devices define many of their capabilities, such as whether they are capable of strong security and encryption, power consumption, whether they are sophisticated enough to support an operating system, updatable firmware, and embedded device management agents. As with all hardware design, there are complex tradeoffs between features, hardware cost, software cost, software upgradability and so forth. As a result, understanding the implications of processor choices will demand deep technical skills.

Top 10 Internet of Things Technologies for 2017 and 2018 - slide 8

IoT Operating Systems

Traditional operating systems (OSs) such as Windows and iOS were not designed for IoT applications. They consume too much power, need fast processors, and in some cases, lack features such as guaranteed real-time response. They also have too large a memory footprint for small devices and may not support the chips that IoT developers use. Consequently, a wide range of IoT-specific operating systems has been developed to suit many different hardware footprints and feature needs.

Top 10 Internet of Things Technologies for 2017 and 2018 - slide 9

Event Stream Processing

Some IoT applications will generate extremely high data rates that must be analyzed in real time. Systems creating tens of thousands of events per second are common, and millions of events per second can occur in some telecom and telemetry situations. To address such requirements, distributed stream computing platforms (DSCPs) have emerged. They typically use parallel architectures to process very high-rate data streams to perform tasks such as real-time analytics and pattern identification.

Top 10 Internet of Things Technologies for 2017 and 2018 - slide 10

IoT Platforms

IoT platforms bundle many of the infrastructure components of an IoT system into a single product. The services provided by such platforms fall into three main categories: (1) low-level device control and operations such as communications, device monitoring and management, security, and firmware updates; (2) IoT data acquisition, transformation and management; and (3) IoT application development, including event-driven logic, application programming, visualization, analytics and adapters to connect to enterprise systems.

Top 10 Internet of Things Technologies for 2017 and 2018 - slide 11

IoT Standards and Ecosystems

Although ecosystems and standards aren’t precisely technologies, most eventually materialize as application programming interfaces (APIs). Standards and their associated APIs will be essential because IoT devices will need to interoperate and communicate, and many IoT business models will rely on sharing data between multiple devices and organizations.

Many IoT ecosystems will emerge, and commercial and technical battles between these ecosystems will dominate areas such as the smart home, the smart city and health care. Organizations creating products may have to develop variants to support multiple standards or ecosystems and be prepared to update products during their life span as the standards evolve and new standards and related APIs emerge.
